Prodigal Daughter
Persephone goes home in the spring. Mother Earth’s prodigal daughter, the flowers bloom upon her return. Winters are long and arduous, but the world breathes when she comes home.
This was the harshest, coldest winter of all. Death claimed so many souls, the Underworld stunk of rotting flesh and unfulfilled dreams. How Persephone mourned the life she once had. How she longed to go home. How she longed for the warmth of Mother Earth’s embrace.
And, as spring approaches, it feels as though Persephone can breathe a little easier now. She dreams of fragrant gardens, warm rays of sun grazing her bronzed skin, and the gentle waves of the Caribbean Sea against her back. A smile travels across the soft features of her face because she knows that, if only for a little while, those dreams will soon be her reality.
Persephone goes home in the spring. Mother Earth’s prodigal daughter will return and the flowers will bloom at her feet. These winters can be long and arduous, but they always come to an end. Nature will breathe again when she returns; Persephone will breathe again, too.
